Scoop of the Century is the fifth episode of Medabots Spirit.

Content[]

Summary[]

The school proposes that Erika's Newspaper Club merge with the Broadcast Club, but neither party will budge, and the decision will be made through a popular vote. Erika immediately rushes out to find a scoop. At that time, Kam gave a Kilobot to Zumi from the Broadcasting Club.

Plot[]

Scoop of the century 1

The Newspaper Club and the Broadcast Club are informed that they should merge as both only have one member and cover news. Erika (Newspaper Club) and Zumi (Broadcast Club) refuse to let their club be merged on the other and decide to have a competition to see who can get the best scoop, with the loser joining the winner.

Erika, in an effort to get the best scoop and following a suggestion from her friend, Moira, decides to interview Ikki, the second place from the World Championship. Meanwhile, Zumi can't wait to get a scoop, but he trips and his best camera breaks. Kam saw this and they chat, and Kam decides to help Zumi by giving him a Kilobot, Fotoshoot, so he can win against Erika. This Kilobot is able to broadcast the news as it happens.

Erika's article is a success, until Zumi's broadcast draws the attention of their classmates. It shows poor Ikki in comical situations, which makes him popular. Erika is furious, and decides to give the public what they want at Ikki's expense. One of Erika's news even shows Ikki throwing out a failed test, causing him to get tons of homework as punishment. Now Ikki is angry with Erika.

Scoop of the century 2

As the competition continues, Fotoshoot secretly saw Moira putting a love letter in the desk of her secret crush. At the same time, Erika is capturing people at their worst. When both competitors see a fire truck go by, Fotoshoot attacks Brass in order for Zumi to get to the scoop first.

A short time later, while Nae is repairing Brass, Erika learns that Brass really didn't want to fight. The Medabot admits that if she won, she would have to collect more terrible stories for Erika. Nae and Ikki try to explain to Erika that she is making fun of people, revealing their secrets, and betraying her friends. In other words, she is no better than Zumi. As they are telling her this, Moira comes running up crying.

Brass kicking ass

Erika and Ikki race to the school to find Zumi holding Moira's love letter. He is about to open it in front of the whole viewing audience. To avoid this, Brass takes on Fotoshoot. Erika is able to grab the letter from Zumi and scold him, saying that their integrity and friends are more important than their journalistic success. Unbeknownst to Erika, Ikki is televising the whole thing with Zumi's camera. In the end, Brass takes down Fotoshoot, and Erika apologizes for acting the way she has.

The next day, Erika is overjoyed when the Newspaper Club wins by a landslide. However, not long after, they learn that both clubs could stay and all this turmoil was for nothing. Oh well... Till next time!

Trivia[]

  • The DMC in Fotoshoot's box stands for Death Medarot Company. In the dub, the Death Medarot Company is known as Extreme Tech, and Death Medarots as Kilobots.
  • The right arm used by Fotoshoot in the rematch against Brass is from Desperado.

Medabots Spirit Amazake Newspaper

Amazake Newspaper

  • Inside the teacher room, the text 真実一路 (lit. "a single truth" or "always the truth", meaning "to believe in only the truth and stick to it") was translated as "Nothing But the Truth".
  • Although the Ginjou Elementary School kept its original name in Spaceship Superstars, and the text "Ginjyo" was visible in multiple locations in the previous episode, the school was named Riverview Junior High (Riverview High for short) in this episode, matching with Erika's newspaper, Riverview Review, which was previously mentioned in Fifteen Minutes of Shame.
    • Of note, in the Japanese version, the Riverview Review is called the Ginjou Elementary School Newspaper in the original anime and the Amazake Newspaper in Medabots Spirit.
  • A short scene showing Brass was cut.
  • An eyecatch was added after Kam gave an Ex Medal for Zumi.
  • The recording of Ikki eating a popsicle and running to the bathroom was cut.
  • Ikki cheating when playing cards with Metabee was cut.
  • The text 視聴覚室 (AV Room) was translated.
  • The fadeout after Erika and Brass took a picture of Ikki throwing his failed test was replaced by an eyecatch.
  • Some scenes while Ikki and Erika are arguing were cut. For example, Erika tells Ikki that what happened with him was a good thing, as not only he became more popular, he will also study more to improve, but Ikki does not see things the same way, and angrily scatters Erika's newspaper and his homework (several genkō yōshi pages) around. This is why there are damaged papers on the floor near Moira after the two finished arguing.
  • The close up on the boy Moira likes was cut.
  • The picture of a man sleeping on a bench (apparently drunken) was replaced by a picture of a boy crying. The replacement comes from Fighting Temptation, being one of the boys that had his Medal destroyed by Tankbank.
  • An eyecatch was added after Fotoshoot defeated Brass.
  • When the photo of the sleeping man reappears, it was replaced by the photo of the man that dropped a box of tomatoes.
  • Two repeated photos of Ikki and Metabee were cut, alongside the static scene after the photos.
  • During the voting, the texts 放送部 (Broadcast Club) and 新聞部 (Newspaper Club) were translated, and the 正 tally marks were replaced by a X mark on the Newspaper Club, but the Broadcast Club remained with the first stroke from 正 instead of having one X mark.
  • The dub cut the scenes showing the Amazake Newspaper with the news showing Ikki rescuing a bird that fell from the nest and returning it to the nest. Zumi complains that he lost to a boring article, and Erika is happy that she won, also reminding Zumi that he should keep his promise and join her club.
  • In the original, the subject Ikki is studying is kanji. In the dub, he is studying geography and algebra, and Metabee jokes that his next subject will be rocket science. Of note, one of the books held by Metabee has the text 漢字ドリル (Kanji Drill).
